Florida Day 1-3: The Long Drive Down

Posted March 20th, 2009, 12:48 am by karl

This is the first in a series of posts about our vacation to Florida. We had a fun, if exhausting, 11 day trip. Highlights (other than the thrillling 40 hours of driving) included a trip to the Creative Discovery Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a stay at Grandma’s, a trip to the beach, three days at Disney World, a day in Savannah, and a drive along the Blue Ridge parkway.

Louisville at night, handheld camera at 70 mph. Pretty bad, but I thought it was interesting.

Tennessee at 70 mph. It was interesting to watch the seasons change as we drove farther south.

All tuckered out from a late night and big breakfast.

Driving into Chattanooga, TN. There are actually supposed to be two lanes here. For bicycles, maybe?

And finally, the sight that greeted us as we drove into Lakeland, Florida. Vultures eating a dead armidillo. Yummy.

New York, New York

The city so nice, they named it twice.

Katra and I went to New York for a few days to attend the Toy Industry Association toy fair, and while there we had a chance to do a little sightseeing.

The south end of Manhattan from the top of the Empire State Building. The Statue of Liberty is just visible at the upper right of the photo.

One of the residents at the top of the Empire State. There were a bunch of pigeons huddling around in a cluster near a door where warm air would blow when people went in and out.

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

How about a little E.V.O.O. with that?

I finally find someone taller than me.

Times Square

The Hershey store at Times Square. The outside was much more impressive than the inside.

Elvis M&M, at the M&M Store.

The old church next to the World Trade Center site. This church has been around for hundreds of years (George Washington attended it when he lived in New York) but it appeared to have been completely untouched by the WTC collapse. It served as a waystation for WTC workers after the disaster, and is now a museum as tribute to those volunteers.

A hole where one of the WTC towers used to stand. After over 5 years, they haven’t gotten any farther than this.

Artist’s conception of the eventual memorial. There will be two large fountain basins where the WTC towers used to stand.

A Day at the Farm

Over the weekend we made a trip to visit the families, which included a visit to Grandma & Grandpa’s farm.

Grandma with Kyle on one of his many, many trips down the BEST SLIDE EVER, in the play fort:

Kyle really got a kick out of the chickens (not literally). As I type this, he’s sitting on my lap saying, “CHICKENS!!!!!”

Original Kyle standing next to Chicken Kyle:

Kyle even helped to grade some apples. As I type this, he’s sitting on my lap saying, “APPLES!!!!!”

He picked out one of the best, and here he is waiting to buy it.

The highlight of the trip was the hayride.

Kyle even helped Grandpa drive the big tractor. As I type this, he’s sitting on my lap saying, “PAPAW!!!!!”

All in all, a very fine and memorable trip.
